Uganda Part 1

Our bags are packed...all 8 of them (and most of them are filled with donations for the orphans)! We left Monday, May 31st, to fly DC for the night. We met up with some of the 27 team members...four of us are returning, again, from last year.

We left Washington DC on Tuesday, June 1st, on Ethiopian Airlines at 12:00 pm for a 14 hour flight to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This was Montana's first ever flight!!! We had to keep entertained somehow, so we drew on our eye masks. Then we had a 2 hour flight to Uganda. I didn't sleep a wink the whole trip...up for over 36 hours.
e Finally arrive in Uganda on June 2nd at 12:30 pm with a HARD double bump landing (scaring us all!). What a blessing when we saw all 90+ suitcases arrive safely. We loaded them into the back of a large truck and we rode in a van the 1 1/2 hours to Kampala. We even had to pull over and let the President of Uganda's motorcade pass us by!
Some things we noticed on our drive:
  • Bright red dirt
  • van taxis and boda-bodas (motorcycle taxi's) driving CRAZY with no regard to any traffic laws
  • Cows in the street
  • Kids waving and calling us "Muzungu" (which means, "white person")
  • Drove by the President's compound
  • Women carrying things on their heads
  • Lots of bicycles being used to haul and carry items
  • All the store mannequins are white
The first 2 days we stayed at the Adoni Hotel (a Christian Guest House) and each room was a name for God. Brittany and I stayed in the "Elohim" Room with mosquito nets over the beds.
Our first dinner in Uganda was: white rice, peas & carrots, beef cubes, fresh pineapple, veggie plate (cucumbers, tomatoes, avocados, onions) and freshly squeezed Mango juice - YUMMMMM!

We finally fell into bed around 9:30 pm under the nets, listening to the monkeys squawking outside.

Thanks for writing - will be interested to hear more. How was it to sleep under mosquito nets?
